Pharmacology: Mariri

PHARMACOLOGY OF AYAHUASCA
Mariri (Banisteriopsis Caapi):

The Beta-carbolines (Harmine, Harmaline and Tetra-hydroharmine) are extracted from tea made from Mariri (Banisteriopsis Caapi). On its own, Mariri tea can induce indirect psycho-active effects, through its action as an inhibitor on Monoamine Oxide and the resulting increase in serotonin levels in the organism. “Hypnotic” type images and experience mood changes in the Ayahuasca experience can be attributed to the rise in serotonin levels in the central nervous system. The purgative and emetic effects come about through the effect of serotonin on the digestive system and intestine.
